–Delaney-Russell named CGHSB league MVP–
The Kainai High School Lady Warriors proved they were the cream of the crop this season as they captured the Chinook Girls Basketball League championship on March 3-4, 2017, in Pincher Creek, AB., going through the tournament undefeated and claiming the right to hoist the banner in their home gymnasium.
During their year-end banquet, three Lady Warriors and two men’s Warrior players were recognized for their contributions to their teams as Taylor Day Chief (2nd team all-star) and Maggie Mountain Horse (1st team all-star) were named all-stars while Jaidii Delaney-Russell was recognized as the Most Valuable Player for the Chinook Girl’s Basketball League; Wyatt Buckskin (1st team all-star), and Tyreese Weasel Head (2nd team all-star), received all-star awards for the Warriors. The men’s Warriors finished third in league play.
The Lady Warriors’ dream season saw them go through league play undefeated with a balanced attack and a deep bench. Coached by longtime player and administrator in the Kainai education system, Charlton Weasel Head, and former member of council Al Black Water, the Lady Warriors set the tone this season in winning nearly all the tournaments they played in, winning consolation once at a tournament in Milk River earlier this year. They also walked away with the Treaty 7 tournament in Siksika as they handily defeated teams from each of the surrounding reserves.
The Lady Warriors will be competing in the zone playoffs beginning on March 9, 2017, at the Lethbridge College. Their first game is on Thursday at 5 p.m.
