Blood Tribe Public Works Piloting New Waste Management Program
Standoff, AB – The Blood Tribe Public Works department will be piloting a new program at the Blood Tribe Solid Waste Transfer Station starting November 4, 2024. The month-long trial run of the program is intended to reduce the amount of solid waste that accumulates at the Transfer Station and to keep the facility clean.
Public Works crews have started cleaning several decades worth of accumulated waste in the past several weeks to organize and implement best waste management practices at the facility.
The Solid Waste Transfer Station’s new schedule starting November 4, 2024, is as follows:
Monday 9:00AM – 5:00PM
Tuesday CLOSED
Wednesday 9:00AM – 5:00PM
Thursday CLOSED
Friday CLOSED
Saturday 9:00AM – 5:00PM
Sunday CLOSED
The new schedule corresponds with Chief Mountain Solid Waste Transfer Authority’s other transfer station’s operation hours at the Cardston, Hillspring/Glenwood, and Spring Coulee (St. Mary’s Dam Road) locations.
The Blood Tribe has an agreement with Chief Mountain Solid Waste Transfer Authority which permits members of the Blood Reserve to dispose of domestic garbage only at their various locations surrounding the Reserve. Blood Tribe members must follow the Chief Mountain Solid Waste Transfer Authority Regulations; transfer station locations, hours, and regulations can be found at https://chiefmountainsolidwaste.ca/transfer-stations.
The Blood Tribe Public Works department is piloting this new program to mirror the waste management practices in surrounding municipalities and First Nations communities, but it will take a collective effort of Blood Tribe members, departments, and entities to keep our communities clean.
The Blood Tribe Waste Transfer Station will have a bin at the gate for household garbage only when the station is closed. According to Blood Tribe By-Laws, and in accordance with Provincial and Federal laws, it is illegal for anyone, including tribal members and non-members, to dump any materials or use any land on reserve for the disposal or storage of waste. The Blood Tribe Administration encourages to report any illegal activity to the Blood Tribe Police Service at (403)737-3800.
