Standoff, AB – The Blood Tribe Public Works department is reporting a spike in illegal dumping and littering on the Blood Reserve. The Public Works department would like to remind people that dumping outside of designated areas is illegal that is timely to clean up and comes at a cost.
Improper dumping could cause chemicals and microplastics to be exposed to local ecosystems, contaminating the ground water. These chemicals and microplastics are harmful to the migratory birds, animals, and our membership.
Public Works have implemented a waste management program at the Blood Tribe Solid Waste Transfer Station that started November 4, 2024, with new hours of service. The new waste management program is intended to reduce the amount of solid waste that accumulates at the Transfer Station and to keep the facility clean.
The Blood Tribe has an agreement with Chief Mountain Solid Waste Transfer Authority which permits members of the Blood Reserve to dispose of domestic garbage only at their various locations surrounding the Reserve (Cardston, Hillspring/Glenwood, and Spring Coulee (St. Mary’s Dam Road). Blood Tribe members must follow the Chief Mountain Solid Waste Transfer Authority Regulations; transfer station locations, hours, and regulations can be found at https://chiefmountainsolidwaste.ca/transfer-stations.
The Blood Tribe Public Works department has implemented the new program to mirror the waste management practices in surrounding municipalities and First Nations communities, but it will take a collective effort and responsibility of all Blood Reserve members, departments, and entities to keep our communities clean.
According to Blood Tribe By-Laws, and in accordance with Provincial and Federal laws, it is illegal for anyone, including tribal members and non-members, to dump any materials or use any land on reserve for the disposal or storage of waste. The Blood Tribe Administration encourages to report any illegal activity to the Blood Tribe Police Service at (403)737-3800.
