Chief and Council host Elders’ and Lethbridge Residents’ Christmas dinner

Blood Tribe Chief and Council, along with Blood Tribe Administration, hosted their annual Elders’ and Lethbridge residents’ Christmas Dinner on Friday, January 9, 2026. The event was held at the Excite Lethbridge (Agri-Hub and Trade Centre) in Lethbridge, AB., and welcomed approximately 600 guests.
After an opening prayer from Gilbert Eagle Bear, Chief Travis Plaited Hair gave a special acknowledgement recognizing the two eldest Blood Tribe members: Louise Brave Rock and Richard Fox. Both were honoured with gifts and a standing ovation.
Chief Travis Plaited Hair acknowledged the importance of having Elders’ support in the day-to-day operations of both Chief and Council and Blood Tribe Administration.
“We value our Elders, to guide us and give us words of encouragement and help us to keep moving forward,” said Chief Plaited Hair.
The gathering focused on bringing Elders and community members together to start the New Year off in a good way. Guests were provided an opportunity to share a meal, visit, and receive updates from Chief and Council.
During her address, Councillor Maria Russell spoke about the role these gatherings play in teaching our traditions across generations.
“Everyone has a story to share. Everyone has a story to tell. And these are our ways, our traditions we need to keep alive.”
Councillor Beth Day Chief reiterated the importance of these events for keeping us connected as a tribe.
““These opportunities are few and far between, where we get to sit and enjoy a meal and do some visiting, get caught up on what’s actually happening with our members and what’s going on in the community,” said Day Chief.
Throughout the night door prizes and gifts were handed out to all elders in attendance. An Elvis tribute performer kept the audience entertained with a medley of The King’s hits.
Before the evening concluded, representatives from Chief and Council shared New Year messages and provided updates on community matters. These included information on the status of the Big Claim, ongoing Blackfoot language preservation efforts, and work being done by pillar committees.
