As a result of recent Provincial Court’s decisions regarding regular Court operations and to ensure the safety and health of our community members in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Kainai Peacemaking Program (KPP) will be cancelling all Peacemaking sessions until further notice. All Kainai Peacemaking court matters have been adjourned until the end of April 2020.
The Provincial Court of Alberta’s has released information regarding the limiting of all regular operations for the Provincial Court of Alberta until further notice during the current COVID-19 pandemic.
We have been advised that effective Tuesday, March 17, 2020, any person having a family, civil, criminal Court or a Provincial Offences/traffic court appearance in the Alberta Provincial Court, will not need to attend unless the matter is an in-custody or urgent criminal matter, or an urgent family or child protection matter. If you have an upcoming Provincial Court matter please take steps to learn more about whether your matter might be included in this category. Further detail can be found at the following Alberta courts website. https://www.albertacourts.ca/pc/resources/announcements//covid-19-pandemic-planning-for-the-scheduling-of-matters
This website sets out the steps that you need to take if you have a scheduled Court date and we urge you to clarify for yourself what you may be required to do to ensure that you are not putting yourself at jeopardy, including being convicted in absence, by failing to attend or advising the Court of your intentions if you are in fact required to do so.
It is our understanding that the Provincial Court will post further information as it becomes available and it will be important to continue to check the Provincial Court website https://www.albertacourts.ca/pc/home for updates.
