Blood Tribe celebrates partnership of wind turbine projects in Cypress County

Cypress County, AB – EDF Renewables Canada and partners, including the Blood Tribe/Kainai, cut the ribbon to celebrate the completion of the Cypress 1 and 2 Wind Projects on Thursday, September 28, 2023, about 40 kms southeast of Medicine Hat, AB.
In the press release issued, “The Projects have a total capacity of 247-megawatts (MW) of electricity generated by 48 wind turbines, enough zero-emission electricity to power the equivalent of 120,000 average homes in Alberta.”
The Blood Tribe owns in partnership, 25 percent of the projects, alongside EDF Renewables Canada (37.5 percent), Desjardins Group Pension Plan and DGAM Global Private Infrastructure Fund II L.P. (together “Desjardins”) (37.5 percent). Altogether, the total investment is reported at $365 million.
Chief Roy Fox, Makiinima, emphasized the Tribe’s partnerships within Blackfoot territory and making sure that the involvement of our Tribe is significant and beneficial to all involved.
“We (Blood Tribe) always have to try and find ways of raising our own money,” said Makiiinima, “in raising our own money … the more financially sovereign you become.”
Makiiinima also thanked Indigena for their assistance in making the partnership possible.
