Niitsi’powahsini Aokakiopaato’p XI Blackfoot Language Symposium XI – Day one recap

 

Lethbridge, AB – October 16, 2023, marked the first day of the Niitsi’powahsini Aokakiopaato’p – Blackfoot language Symposium XI Conference held at the Coast Lethbridge Hotel & Conference Centre. The conference is host to elders, Blackfoot language speakers, students, and community members of the Blackfoot Confederacy.

The first day of the Blackfoot Language Symposium heard from keynote presenter Spiitawakasi – Lowell Yellowhorn, Manager, Indigenous Studies, Lethbridge College. Yellowhorn shared the Indigenous strategies, initiatives, and protocols the Lethbridge College has forged within the institution and local Indigenous communities.

Blaise Russell, Graduate Student in the Linguistics Department at the University of Calgary presented ‘Survival Phrases’, commonly used Blackfoot words and phrases that occur in everyday situations. These phrases, in the context of Blackfoot, can also help with learning cultural protocol. Blaise is currently a researcher at the Galt Museum.

Evelyn Stabs Down, Blackfoot Language Lead for the Mi’kai’sto Indigenous Language and Culture Diploma (ILCD) Program at Red Crow Community College presented alongside other Mi’kai’sto staff, students, and alumni of the program. The Red Crow Community College ILCD Program is intended for the reclamation, revitalization, and strengthening of Indigenous languages with a focus on the Blackfoot language.

The Aitsi’poyiiksi Committee is proud to host the Niitsi’powahsini Aokakiopaato’p XI Blackfoot Language Symposium XI with key sponsors: Blood Tribe Social Development and Blood Tribe Chief and Council. The conference will conclude on Tuesday, October 17, 2023.
