Blood Tribe News

Haley Grace Shade University of Calgary Medical School Acceptance (Surgical Residency)

Omah’kamootstakii ‘Big Victory Woman’, Haley Grace Shade, will begin her residency at the University of Calgary in General Surgery. Haley obtained her Bachelor of Science in Biology and was accepted to three medical schools. She ultimately chose the University of Calgary as it is on her traditional territory of the Siksikaitsitapi, the Real People. Haley is the daughter of Cam and Crystal Shade and sister to Jaylin. Haley’s grandparents are Don and Marie Shade and Gilbert and Velma Eagle Bear.

Haley completed her medical degree at the University of Calgary and will begin her surgical residency in July. Haley will become the Blood Tribe’s first medical surgeon. Haley hopes to inspire another generation in their dreams by doing outreach to local Indigenous communities through workshops and health fairs. Haley plans to continue to blend her traditional Kainai way of knowing and traditional teachings into her surgical practice. Connecting with her community remains an important part of her educational journey and she will continue to be an advocate for everyone she crosses paths with.

Haley would like to thank all her relations, friends, mentors, and instructors that assisted and encouraged her in achieving her goal to become a surgeon. We wish Haley all the success moving forward!

Blood Tribe Police Service Constable Carol Fenner

Congratulations to Constable Carol Fenner for winning the Corporal Cummings Award, the first indigenous female to receive it for First Nation policing in Alberta. Constable Fenner is a member of the Oneida Nation of the Thames. “With the Blood Tribe Police Service being the leading police service in Canada, I thought that it would be a good idea to move out to Alberta”. Blood Tribe and MADD Canada is proud to acknowledge this accomplishment.

The award recognizes officers who apprehend 25 (or more) impaired drivers in a calendar year. Cpl. Cumming’s Watch is a collaborative effort between Alberta RCMP and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Canada to support police efforts in the detection and removal of impaired drivers on Alberta roads. The program is named in honour of Cpl. Graeme Cumming, a member of the RCMP who was killed on duty by an impaired driver while attending a traffic incident on Highway 3 near Lethbridge, Alta., on August 12, 1998.

Rachel Tailfeathers

The Blood Tribe Administration (BTA) is proud to announce Rachel Tail Feathers as the new Senior Operations Officer (SOO) for Social & Community Services as of December 5, 2023. Tail Feathers was the former Director for Blood Tribe Housing and has an extensive work history with various Blood Tribe Departments throughout her career. Tail Feathers was also employed with Canada Mortgage Housing Corporation (CMHC) and with the Sandia Resort and Casino as a VIP Host, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She continues to be a vital asset to the Blood Tribe Reserve and a key figure in it’s continual progression.
