Blood Tribe Health Fair 2024 Begins with Community Walk

May 21, 2024 – The Kitamotspoowawa Blood Tribe Health Fair 2024 kicked off with a community walk in Standoff, AB, with more than 200 community members, event organizers and event partners that showed up for the 2.6km walk in Standoff, AB. The walk was intended to encourage all to join and celebrate the achievements of our community members.

The Community Walk’s MC Troy Many Fingers – Client Case Coordinator for Blood Tribe Wellness Program, opened the event with his inspirational story of his decades-long journey toward completing the Ironman triathlon this past fall. “That’s only half of the story,” Many Fingers said, “if I didn’t overcome my addiction, none of that would have been possible.” Troy is a presenter on the Community Day at the Blood Tribe Health Fair.

John Jared (J.J.) Little Bear, Blood Tribe Department of Health Board of Directors asked participants for a moment of silence for loved ones, friends, and families. Little Bear welcomed and gave thanks to the event organizers, youth participants, guest speakers and presenters, and most importantly the community members.

The Community Walk was lead by banner carriers who were our young athletes, Persons with Lived Experience (PWLE), Red Crow Community College representatives and hockey players (men and ladies) that returned from the Freddy Saskamoose “Chief Thunderstick” National Hockey Championship in Saskatoon, SK. Darnel Tailfeathers, Blood Tribe Tribal Government Consultant and Kainai Braves General Manager and Head Coach, gave opening remarks and a Braves update of the Chief Thunderstick tournament this past weekend. “We finished top three out of 40 and the only Alberta team to advance in our pool,” Tailfeathers said.

“One of the things that keeps our young people away from addictions is socializing through sports and recreation,” Charles Weasel Head, former Blood Tribe Chief and Vice Chairperson of the Blood Tribe Department of Health Board of Directors stated. Weasel Head thanked the Blood Tribe Health Fair organizers, youth and community participants.

“The Blood Tribe Health Fair is more than just an event, it is a crucial part of our strategic focus to combat the challenges we face,” Derrick Fox, Blood Tribe Department of Health CEO stated. “I encourage everyone to join us in celebrating these milestones, it is through events like this that we strengthen our bonds and foster a spirit of togetherness.”

The Blood Tribe Health Fair will take place at the Red Crow Community College from May 22 to May 23, 2024, with guest speakers, presenters, and performers to inspire all Blood Tribe community members to live a prosperous and healthy lifestyle.
