Blood Tribe Health Fair 2024 hosts Community Day at Red Crow Community College

May 22, 2024 – The 1st annual Katamotspoowawa Blood Tribe Health Fair 2024 commenced today at the Red Crow Community College which drew in the membership of the Blood Tribe, tribal departments and entities, and proponents of a healthy Kainaiwa. The Blood Tribe Health Fair provides an opportunity for community members to gather, learn, and celebrate the resilience, strength, and kindness at a challenging time in our history.

The Health Fair Community Day included an opening prayer from Blood Tribe elders Roger and Cathy Hunt, remarks from event organizers and partners, keynote speaker, breakout sessions with various presenters, panel with Persons with Lived Experience, and was hosted by Master of Ceremonies Trevor “Kiitokii” Prairie Chicken.

“This gathering will foster collaboration and growth for all involved,” Samantha Fox, Red Crow Community College Vice President of Academics stated, “our people are a priority and deserve every opportunity to live healthy lives.” Fox greeted all participants of the Blood Tribe Health Fair to the Red Crow Community College.

“We need the help of the community, we need the help of the family, we need to have everyone on board to push and challenge [the opioid crisis],” Charles Weasel Head, former Blood Tribe Chief and Vice Chairperson of the Blood Tribe Department of Health Board of Directors stated. “We need our community to reach out to each other.”

“We will draw from the past, as far as our culture and our identity, to continue that resilience,” Derrick Fox, Blood Tribe Department of Health Chief Executive Officer stated. “Resilience isn’t just about surviving; it’s about thriving as well and that is what we want to continue to share.”

Blood Tribe member Wacey Rabbit, Saskatoon Blades Assistant Coach and Health Fair Keynote Speaker shared his leadership journey in professional hockey. “For me, I knew the leadership I learned from growing up [on the reserve], you take care of one another,” Rabbit explained, “we leave things better than when we found it, and that’s the type of leadership I leaned on throughout my WHL career.”

“We need to speak life into the community of the Blood Tribe,” Leroy Wolf Collar, Blood Tribe Senior Executive Officer and former Siksika Chief stated, “let’s inspire and motivate our people by bringing people like Wacey Rabbit to talk about their personal experiences and how they overcame them. That’s the objective of this Health Fair.”

The Blood Tribe Health Fair will conclude on May 23, 2024, with youth centred programming with Indigenous performer Mattmac, keynote speakers, scholarship presentations, breakout sessions from various presenters, and hosted by inspirational speaker Sheena Kaine.
