Blood Tribe Olympian, Apollo Hess Receives Headdress at Honouring Ceremony

On June 3, 2024, Blood Tribe member and Olympian Mootoyaohkii – Apollo Hess received a headdress at an honouring ceremony and media event held at the Red Crow Community College in Standoff, AB. The event was attended by Blood Tribe leadership and administration, Blackfoot Confederacy Tribal Council, spiritual leaders, family, community supporters, and members of the news media.

“It’s a really good day to honour Apollo, he is the first Blood swimmer to represent [the Tribe] in the Olympics,” Piinaakoyim Tailfeathers, Blood Tribe council member spoke on behalf of Makiinima, Chief Roy Fox. “We want you to know we are behind you, we’re all proud of you, you’re representing our Tribe.”

“Makiinima is so proud of what you have accomplished, and we know you will accomplish more in the future,” Dr. Genevieve Fox, Education Director at Blackfoot Confederacy Tribal Council said and presented Apollo with a treaty medallion on behalf of Chief Roy Fox. “The blood of your ancestors runs in your veins, be strong, continue to do well; whatever you do, we will be behind you.”

“You’re a role model to a lot of our children, you are blazing a trail that is going to open the doors for other people in the future,” Jack Royal, Blackfoot Confederacy Tribal Council CEO said. “On behalf of all of the chiefs and the Blackfoot Confederacy, I wanted to say thank you and congratulations.”

“A big part of my development as an Indigenous person was the love I received from many of you here today,” Apollo Hess acknowledged and thanked many of his family and friends and most notably his mother, Ingrid Hess. Apollo shared his story of his path to the Olympics, “If you have a dream and you really want it, you speak it out into the universe and it will happen.”

Apollo Hess has been named to the Canada Olympic swim team to compete in the 2024 Olympics held in Paris, France. The games will take place from July 26 – August 11, 2024.

The Blood Tribe would like to congratulate Mootoyaohkii, Apollo Hess on making it to the World Olympics and wishes him the best of luck.
