On behalf of Blood Tribe leadership, Blood Tribe Communications & Community Engagement would like to notify all Tribal members that the news article posted by CTV News Calgary at 12:32 p.m. MST on January 29, 2026, has reported misinformation regarding the Border Crossing Advisory our department posted on January 28, 2026.
At this time, there have been no Blood Tribe members that have been stopped or detained by ICE as far as we know. CTV News has misinterpreted our Community Notice issued yesterday and drawn its own conclusions. We are currently working to have CTV News retract and correct its online story.
The Community Notice issued on January 28, 2026, by Blood Tribe Communications & Community Engagement was intended as a cautionary safety advisory to alert Blood Tribe members of reported border crossing incidents involving Indigenous people, so they are aware of what is happening and how to prepare for travel to the United States through U.S. Customs.
The information stated in our Community Notice stems from a statement originally released on January 23, 2026, by The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief, Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak, who issued a general warning statement to all First Nations Tribes across Canada, based on situational border crossing incidents that were reported to AFN.
