Indigenous Peoples Celebration 2026 Brings Direct Funding and Community Dialogue to Lethbridge

The October 23 hybrid gathering will centre Indigenous ideas through a pitch competition, community microbursaries and a public conversation on respectful collaboration

LETHBRIDGE, AB — October, 2026 — BIPOC Foundation will award $4,000 in direct support to Indigenous entrepreneurs and grassroots initiatives during Indigenous Peoples Celebration 2026, a hybrid public gathering on Friday, October 23, at E.C. Fredericks Theatre, Lethbridge Polytechnic.

Running from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m., the event brings funding, learning and recognition into one evening. Selected finalists will present early-stage ideas in the National Indigenous Heritage Pitch Competition, three community initiatives will receive Indigenous Community Microbursary awards, and an Indigenous Learning Series panel will examine what respectful collaboration with Indigenous communities requires in practice.

Hosted by BIPOC Foundation in partnership with SACE Aspire Foundation, the celebration is guided by the theme Reclaiming the Narrative: Exploring Economic Sovereignty, Collaboration, and Systemic Change Needed to Support Indigenous Communities. It centres Indigenous voices and leadership while inviting businesses, institutions, funders and community members to listen, learn and support community-led work.

BIPOC Foundation designed the evening to give Indigenous ideas room to be heard, supported and connected to opportunity. It also links public recognition with practical resources and relationships that can help participants strengthen their next steps.

Direct Support for Indigenous Ideas

Selected finalists in the National Indigenous Heritage Pitch Competition will present early-stage businesses, social enterprises, cultural programs and community initiatives to judges and community advisors. Each finalist will have five minutes to present, followed by a three-minute question and support dialogue. The competition includes $1,000 in funding.

A further $3,000 will be distributed through the Indigenous Community Microbursary Program. Three Indigenous-led grassroots initiatives will receive awards of $1,500, $1,000 and $500. The program supports community work that may include cultural revitalization, language preservation, youth mentorship, wellness and healing, land-based programming, community education and intergenerational storytelling.

Each finalist will also gain visibility, constructive feedback and an opportunity to connect with community advisors, mentors, funders and partners who may support the work beyond the event.

Learning Grounded in Respectful Collaboration

The Indigenous Learning Series panel, Collaborating with Indigenous Communities on a Business and Community Landscape, will focus on community priorities, common misconceptions, relationship building and the systemic changes needed to strengthen Indigenous entrepreneurship. The discussion will examine how businesses, organizations and institutions can move from consultation toward meaningful participation and shared decision-making.

Abdulaziz Sani will moderate the panel and deliver the opening and closing remarks. Mary Fox will offer the Elder Blessing. The program also creates time for attendees to meet participants and continue the conversation over refreshments.

Who Should Attend

Indigenous entrepreneurs, Elders, youth, cultural knowledge keepers, grassroots organizers and Indigenous-led organizations are invited to take part.
